12 Healthy Habits for 2017

The Inspiration: I have found that goals are usually unrealistic and are just as hard to achieve. I have heard that it only takes 21 days of repetition to form a habit. That if you repeat the same action, deliberately for 21 days it will become part of who you are. I have decided that this year I am going to Start the year with 12 healthy habits I want to achieve and diligently work each one for 21 days. Hopefully be this time next year I will have made some improvements. As I start this I found it hard to come up with concise actions I wanted to accomplish. I thought I would open this up to all my Swap-bot friends.

SMART Habits require a very specific formula as most of you know. They must be

Detailed or extremely SPECIFIC, a general goal to lose weight if you do not have a plan to accomplish it is useless. The how, when and where need to be answered to bring it within reach
They need to be MEASURABLE either a time period or number of some sort that you can write down as a record of your progress
They Need to be ATTAINABLE ie don't expect that you will be able to do 100 push ups when you start if you haven't done any before
They need to be RELEVANT ie A goal to lose 10 lbs because your partner says you are fat is not relevant to you, if on the other hand you have a dress you want to wear for a function then it becomes relevant to you. It must be your why, the reason you want to develope this particular habit
They need to be TIMELY this refers back to the when in the first part, when will you start, how long will you do it (21 days for this one), and any milestones along the way.

I am starting on the premise that 12 habits means I can focus on one habit per month of the year, that gives me 28 to 31 days to work with. Of those 21 days are the absolute minimum amount of time I will dedicate to them.

Habit 1: I will get up every day at 8 am and go to bed at 12 am. My sleep schedule is very bad and I need to normalise it a bit. To accomplish this I will set my alarm for 8am and not ignore it no matter how tired I feel. I will set another alarm for 12am and when it goes off regardless of what I am doing I will shut down and turn the lights off and get into bed. I will not move from said bed except to go to the bathroom until the alarm goes of again at 8am

Habit 2: I want to concentrate on getting my food intake normalised. I need a simple menu that is easy to follow and prepare. My thought is to sign up for Meals on Wheels freezer plan which will provide a full dinner for each day of the month. Breakfast can be oatmeal or another cereal for breakfast and soup for lunch. I need to get in the the habit of eating three times a day at a specific time each day. To the alarms above I will add three more one for each meal

Habit 3: I will make it a habit to socially interact with groups of people on a regular basis. I need to do this because I spend everyday interacting with the computer and never leave my home.

I will spend an hour every Thursday with my wheelchair bound, housebound friend.
I will attend the older adults group that meets at the poutine place every Wednesday
I will join Activity Haven and attend @ least three classes per week

In order to make this work out to 21 days I will attend the church two of my friends attend at least twice

Habit 4: I will walk around my block every day before breakfast. I will sign up to the YMCA and make it a habit to attend a one hour class each week.

I need to get my weight under control the first three habits were directed towards this months habit and is the one I will continue to build throughout the year until I am doing the recommended amount of exercise for an obese diabetic

Habit 5: I will be working on my body cleanliness which is an area I consistently fail at. Practice showering every day. Practice daily foot care. Practice daily teeth brushing, daily hair care including the facial hair that comes with menopause. The idea I have is a checklist in the bathroom that I need to check off when completed every single day.

Habit 6: I will create and follow through on a daily list of chores and activities that will keep me occupied and away from the computer. I currently spend 12 to 18 hours a day in front of my computer, I would like to decrease that to around 8 hours

Habit 7: I will become a good Goodreads member and start to keep track of what I read and what I thought of it. I want to see just how many books I read in any given month

Habit 8: I will host at least one swap in each of the Swap-bot groups I am a leader in. The swaps I am hosting for January follow and are linked:

APDG: Celebrate A Wacky Holiday

MCM: Monthly Theme Challenge: Snow
WIYM: What's the Word ATC - International
IS: Homemade Postcard Series #1 International
SMM: Word of the year

I also have one up for January that is not connected to any group it is just something I wanted to do

I do not ... but I will in 2017

Habit 9: I want to stop biting my nails, make the nails long and strong and then get in the habit of doing a home Mani every week, I love painting my nails but I have a bit of trouble letting them get past the end of my fingers

Habit 10: I will post here something every day of 2017 even if It is only a quote or image of some sort

Habit 11: I want to get in the habit of changing my bed sheet every week now that I have enough sheets to make this possible

Habit 12: I will put any money left over in my main account into my savings account, I am saving for a new bed and paid funeral arrangements.

The Imaginary World of .... Cherylann Marois Part 6

For the SIXTH TASK: Relax. Find a comfortable sitting position. Take deep breaths. Remove all distractions. Have a pen or pencil, or any medium you like, ready. Think of a space that you really love, a place you have been or a place you have seen in photos, a place that makes you giddy, that give you energy. Place yourself there and describe what you are looking at. What materials? What sounds? What smells? Look closely. Give it a name, it is your space.Personalize it, add a decoration, something you use, something you love.

I go to this clearing often in my mind. It is based on one I knew as a child. The only sounds here are the breeze in the trees and the songs of the local wrens. The trees are smooth barked and the ground is more moss than grass. There are butterflies everywhere though there is no really noticeable flowers for them.

I call it simply the clearing, for two reasons; one that is what it is, an open space surrounded by trees, and two because when I go here I am doing so to clear my mind or find a little peace in the middle of chaos.

I added three things that would not normally be here, a tuxedo cat because I love them and a cats purr pleases my soul, a cup of coffee in a red cup much like the one I use and finally a book. The book is a representation of my journal, which I use to sort out my thoughts when a simple meditation will not do it.

ESG: Let me recommend a book #17

Welcome, Welcome, Welcome!

I had such a hard time choosing a book to recommend! In the end I decided to go with two.

This is book one in a series of six. If you like Greek Mythology and Fantasy you will like this series.

Title: Goddess Legacy
Series: Goddess Series
Author: M. W. Muse
Synopsis: Legacy Kore is an average seventeen year old with your basic insane crush on the hottest guy in school... rather Adin Shepard was the hottest guy in school before he graduated a couple of weeks ago. Now it’s summer vacation and she’s not sure when she’ll get to see him again. Until he shows up at her surprise seventeenth birthday party. Cue saliva glands--it’s time to drool.

But her giddiness is cut short when her guardian delivers an emotional blow, telling Legacy her mother hadn’t died when she was baby, but that she’d left for Legacy’s protection all those years ago. After the initial shock, she expects some story about how her mother was in the Witness Protection Program or something else just as crazy, but when she’s told that her mother is a Greek Goddess and that Legacy is changing into one too, she thinks her guardian needs a trip to a mental hospital. Legacy a goddess? Um, yeah. Right. And her BFF is the Easter Bunny.

While trying to make sense out of something that was impossible to believe, Adin asks Legacy out on a date. She is thrilled that her fantasy might become a reality, but when she meets the new guy in town, River, she discovers everything isn’t always as it seems, and the legacy she wants just might not be the legacy she is destined to have.

My Take: This book has a 3.6 star rating at GoodReads. After reading the reviews there I was a little upset. I liked this book, it was the perfect mind break for me. If you are a serious book reader it may not appeal to you, it is written for the YA group and as such is simple but as an introduction to the series it was great.

This is also book 1 in a series of 5 I am reading. Fantasy and Dragons makes it cool!

Title: Hidden
Series Dragonlands
Author: Meg Jensen
Synopsis: The mystery enshrouding Hutton’s Bridge is as impenetrable as the fog that descended at its borders eighty years ago. Each year, three villagers enter the mist searching for answers. No one ever returns.

Then a dragon falls from the sky to the town square, dead—the first glimpse of an outside world that has become nothing more than a fairy tale to Hutton’s Bridge. Except to Tressa.

Tressa grew up with Granna’s stories of the days before the fog fell. When Granna dies, leaving Tressa without any family, Tressa ventures into the fog herself, vowing to unravel the foul magic holding Hutton’s Bridge captive.

What she discovers beyond the fog endangers the lives of everyone she loves.

My Take: Dragons! OK so I'm an easy sell I like any books that feature dragons. This one though drew me in from the first line. The need to know how this came about burned in me. I am now on book three of the series and have a hard time making myself put my reader down so I can sleep.

Clean your house! #3

This is the only closet in my bachelor and as you can see it is a bit crowded. I basically just stuffed everything I didn't need right now into it. Once I pulled everything out and put it on my bed this is what it looked like.

It is quite roomy as you can see once the mess was cleared out.

This is what it looks like now. I am not completely satisfied with how it looks but it looks better than it did.

Creating Kindness and Love

In the beginning it was simple, a smile to a stranger. That is how I began!

Soon enough I was waving thank you to drivers who stopped to let me cross a street.

After that it was an easy step to add a hello or good morning to the smile.

Next came the yelled thank you to the nice driver along with the wave

And of course the conversations about nothing with a stranger while waiting for a bus.

Such small simple things but you know more often then not I get a smile and a hello back and the drivers they smile and wave back.

By and large it is the conversations I like best, interacting with a complete stranger makes us both feel good. And for myself at least it eases the loneliness I feel some days.

I don't have a lot of money to throw around but if I have change I give it to the street person who asks. I haven't bought a coffee for the next in line but I gave my bus pass to a driver on the day it was to expire so some poor soul could take the bus if they needed to even if they didn't have any money.

Often I think it is the small courtesies that are appreciated most. Sayin hello and wishing some one a good day or even holding open a door to allow a wheelchair or baby buggy to get through. A thank you to a bus driver, cashier or post person makes them smile and sometimes they even say it back.

As I get older I see such simple courtesies disappearing even though I feel like we should be doing more of it. I taught my grandsons to smile and say hello to strangers, I hope they remember when they become adults and do the same. Sure, I suppose you could say such things are dangerous and I agree but 99% of the time the stranger danger is just in our own heads.

Would I do more if I could, you betcha! Were money no object and pain non-existent I would be out on the winter rounds to deliver coats, blankets and other things to the homeless in my home town. Were space not an issue I would provide a meal for them every day. I can not do these things because my ill health prevents me but you could!

Or if you suffer as I do remember a simple smile and a hello could brighten up someones day!

Favorite Memory from 2016

On July 1st I officially became a resident of this building. There are several reasons this is my favourite memory of the year.

1) My rent was reduced by $300, on a fixed income that is huge!
2) I have fond memories of this neighbourhood. I spend my happiest years here.
3) See those steps on the left, I was sitting on them when I met the only man I ever officially married
4) The area is fairly quiet compared to the central apartment building I was living in.
5) I am within walking distance of a Tim Hortons, a grocery store and a pharmacy. A bulk store is also close by
6) My neighbours in the building are older adults like me
7) My own kitchen, my own bathroom and laundry 20 steps away from my apartment

It is compact and comfortable. I feel lucky that I not only got into a brand new unit, I made a couple of friends.

Show me your Christmas decorations

I have done very little decorating this year as I am still adjusting to my new surroundings. I have only lived here six months and am still getting organized
This little tree has been with me only a couple of years. This is the first time I have decorated in a traditional manner but I felt the need for an old fashioned kind of tree.

This nativity was a gift from my daughter a few years ago. It normally sat on my dining table but I don't have one here so I placed it in the window and back-lighted it with a standing lamp I have. This is my most public display.

This is the inside of my front door. It is a metal fire door which is perfect for these magnetic hooks. The stockings are for the professor and I. When I get out again his will have a few little gadgets in it. Mine holds the Christmas gifts I received from my swap-bot partners.

This little guy sits on my bedside table. I have had him for a long time. Sometimes when the winter gets to me he sleeps with me.

This is the front of my door. My neighbours have bigger, fancier displays but I like my bells.

And since I spend a lot of time in front of my computer this is my home screen

Would you rather? Round #4

Would you rather have nosy neighbors or noisy neighbors?
I have both where I live and in all honesty I prefer them noisy cause then they are not peering into my life

Would you rather be on a survival reality show or dating game show?
A dating game show some how I don't think I'd last a week in a survival setting

Would you rather be too busy or be bored?
Depends on the day, if I had to choose I would say be bored cause that is an easy fix, there are tons of things I can do to ease the boredom. If you are too busy you don't have time to enjoy life much.

Would you rather watch the big game at home or live at the stadium.
Again I've done both of these things and I prefer to watch it at home with a few friends

Would you rather spend the day with your favorite athlete or you favorite movie star?
My favorite movie star, I think it would be interesting to meet her in a non-public forum for a chat.

Would you rather live where it is constantly winter or where it is constantly summer?
Neither can I choose that? Of these two I prefer summer because I don't get enough light in the winter.

Would you rather travel the US and see the sights in a motorhome or by plane?
Oh please how can you see the sights from an airplane, a motorhome please so I can stop and get a close-up view of something if I want to.

Would you rather be a little late or way too early?
I panic when I'm late so for me it has to be way too early, ussually there is a coffee shop or something nearby so I can kill the extra time if I need to.

Would you rather have an unlimited gift certificate to a restaurant or a clothing store?
A year ago I would have said a clothing store, these days I would prefer the restaurant. I have practically stopped cooking as its just no fun to cook for one any more

Would you rather date someone you met online or go on a blind date?
Either way you can get screwed but since I met my husband online it makes sense to go that way again.

Would you rather your kids wear a uniform to school or clothing of their choice?
I would rather my kids had the choice. I know there is the possibility of them wearing something inappropriate but uniforms can be altered to be inappropriate as well and regular clothes don't cost a premium price or require specialized care.

Would you rather have many good friends or one very best friend?
I have many good friends but I do not have a best friend and I wish I did.

Would you rather live in Antarctica or the Sahara Dessert?
Oy what a choice, they couldn't pick something in-between? I don't know which would be worse freezing 9 months a year or boiling during the day and freezing by night 12 months of the year. Actually Now that I have written that I think I would prefer Antarctica at least they get a semblance of seasonal change.

Would you rather be able to take back anything you say or hear every conversation around you?
Take back my own words. Sometimes things just come out sounding wrong and I would love to be able to take them back.

Would you rather be 4’5” or 7’7”?
Since I am only a teeny bit over 5 feet I'd be OK going down to 4' 5". 7' 7" just seems too damn tall!

High school Graduation - Sara and three of her Father Figures
There is a reason I call her our Rainbow child. These are three of the four father figures that have been present in her life. On the left is her biological father, in the centre is the one she calls Dad, he is Italian, the one on the right is my husband, the professor, her grandfather. He is Chinese, the fourth is her mothers husband and he is Polish. He had to stay home and watch her brothers. Add to this me and her mother who are Native Indian/French you can see she has had a lot of ethnic mixing in her life. As the oldest of my grandchildren she fills me with pride and hope for the future!
